This is just twisted. What kind of law allows for sheriffs to keep leftover budgeted money? Who's brilliant idea was that? Man some people just don't think things through.
You may remember the recent articles on the Alabama sheriffs whose wallets grew fatter as inmates grew thinner. Although the state budgets only $1.75 a day to feed each prisoner, Alabama law allows sheriffs to keep for themselves whatever money is left over after they feed their prisoners. Well now, the Sheriff's Association, in what can only be considered an effort to cover its own butt, has instructed Sheriffs not to respond to the Southern Center for Human's Rights requests to know how much money they have left after feeding the inmates.
